Description

Gifaxin 200 Tablet contains Rifaximin, a broad-spectrum, gut-specific antibiotic mainly used for treating intestinal infections. Unlike most antibiotics, Rifaximin works locally in the intestine because it is minimally absorbed into the bloodstream. This makes it particularly useful in conditions related to bacterial overgrowth in the gut.

Uses / Indications

  • Traveler’s diarrhea caused by non-invasive Escherichia coli

  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Diarrhea (IBS-D)

  • Hepatic encephalopathy (prevents recurrence by lowering gut ammonia-producing bacteria)

  • Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO)

  • Other intestinal infections as advised by the doctor

How It Works (Mechanism of Action)

  • Rifaximin (200 mg): Belongs to the rifamycin class of antibiotics.

  • Blocks bacterial RNA synthesis → stops bacterial growth and multiplication.

  • Works locally in the gut, targeting harmful bacteria while sparing beneficial ones to some extent.

Dosage & Administration

  • Typical adult dose: 200 mg tablet 2–3 times daily (varies depending on condition).

  • Swallow with water, with or without food.

  • Duration of treatment usually ranges from 3 to 14 days depending on diagnosis.

  • Complete the full prescribed course even if symptoms improve early.

(Exact dosage should always be confirmed by a doctor.)

Side Effects

Common:

  • Nausea, vomiting

  • Abdominal pain, bloating, gas

  • Headache, dizziness

  • Fatigue

Less common but possible:

  • Constipation or diarrhea

  • Skin rash or itching

  • Fever

Serious (rare):

  • Severe allergic reaction (swelling, breathing difficulty, rash)

  • Severe or persistent diarrhea (possible Clostridium difficile infection)

  • Liver-related side effects in long-term/high-dose use

Precautions & Warnings

  • Not useful for infections with fever, blood in stool, or systemic bacterial infections.

  • Caution in patients with severe liver disease.

  • Prolonged use may lead to antibiotic resistance.

  • Safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding is not fully established – use only if clearly prescribed.

  • Inform the doctor about all ongoing medicines (possible interactions with cyclosporine, warfarin, etc.).

Summary

Gifaxin 200 Tablet (Rifaximin 200 mg) is a gut-targeted antibiotic mainly prescribed for traveler’s diarrhea, IBS-D, hepatic encephalopathy, and bacterial intestinal infections. It is generally safe with mild side effects like nausea, bloating, or headache, but must be taken only under medical guidance to avoid resistance or complications.
