Description

Espra DSR Capsule is a combination medication containing Domperidone and Esomeprazole, used to manage gastrointestinal disorders such as acid reflux, heartburn, and delayed gastric emptying.

  • Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that reduces the production of stomach acid, providing relief from symptoms of GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), erosive esophagitis, and peptic ulcers.

  • Domperidone is a prokinetic agent that enhances gastric motility, facilitating faster emptying of the stomach contents into the intestine. It also helps reduce nausea and vomiting.

The DSR (Delayed and Sustained Release) formulation ensures controlled release of the drug, providing long-lasting symptom relief with improved patient compliance.

Uses of Espra DSR Capsule

  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) – reduces acid reflux and heartburn

  • Peptic ulcer disease – promotes healing by reducing gastric acid

  • Gastroparesis and delayed gastric emptying – improves stomach motility

  • Nausea and vomiting – especially associated with gastric disorders

  • Other acid-related gastrointestinal conditions as prescribed by a physician

How It Works

  • Esomeprazole: Blocks the proton pumps in the stomach lining, reducing acid secretion and allowing the esophagus and stomach to heal from acid-induced irritation.

  • Domperidone: Enhances upper gastrointestinal motility, ensuring faster movement of food through the stomach and intestines. It also blocks dopamine receptors in the chemoreceptor trigger zone, reducing nausea.

  • The combination provides dual action: symptom relief from acid-related damage and improved gastric emptying.

Dosage and Administration

  • Usually taken once daily, preferably 30–60 minutes before a meal, or as prescribed.

  • Swallow the capsule whole with water; do not crush or chew.

  • Follow the prescribed duration of therapy to ensure effective treatment and prevent recurrence.

Side Effects

Common side effects:

  • Headache

  • Dizziness or drowsiness

  • Dry mouth

  • Abdominal discomfort or bloating

  • Mild diarrhea or constipation

Serious side effects (rare):

  • Irregular heartbeat (especially in patients with pre-existing heart conditions)

  • Severe allergic reactions (rash, swelling, difficulty breathing)

  • Liver enzyme abnormalities

  • Extrapyramidal symptoms (tremors or involuntary movements in rare cases due to Domperidone)

Seek medical attention if severe or persistent symptoms occur.

Precautions

  • Avoid use in patients with known allergy to Domperidone or Esomeprazole.

  • Caution in patients with heart disease, liver dysfunction, or electrolyte imbalance.

  • Not recommended for long-term use without medical supervision due to risk of heart-related side effects with Domperidone.

  • Inform the doctor about other medications to prevent drug interactions.

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women should use only under medical supervision.

Drug Interactions

  • Other prokinetics or antiarrhythmic drugs – may increase risk of cardiac arrhythmias

  • Drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 or CYP2C19 enzymes – Esomeprazole may alter their levels

  • Anticoagulants and antiplatelets – monitor for bleeding risk

  • Other acid-suppressing medications – may require dose adjustment
