Description

NOXITEF contains Norfloxacin 400 mg per tablet in blister packaging. Norfloxacin is a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic indicated for the treatment of certain bacterial infections. It is most frequently used for urinary tract infections (UTIs), prostatitis, gonorrhoea, and infections of the gastrointestinal tract such as traveller’s diarrhoea.

How it Works

Norfloxacin acts by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase, an enzyme required for DNA replication and cell repair. This prevents the bacteria from multiplying and repairing themselves, leading to effective elimination of the infection-causing organisms.

Main Uses

  • Treatment of uncomplicated and complicated urinary tract infections (pyelonephritis, cystitis, urethritis).

  • Management of bacterial prostatitis (infection/inflammation of the prostate).

  • Therapy for gonorrhoea and certain sexually transmitted diseases.

  • Control of some gastrointestinal tract infections (e.g. traveller’s diarrhoea, enteric fever) caused by susceptible bacteria.

Key Benefits

  • Rapid initiation of antibacterial activity, leading to symptom relief and infection resolution.

  • Effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

  • Oral administration with flexible dosing, usually once or twice daily.

Dosage & Administration

  • Dosage and duration depend on infection type, severity, and doctor’s recommendations—commonly one tablet twice daily, 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals for optimal absorption.

  • Complete the full prescribed course even if symptoms improve early, to prevent resistance and recurrence.

  • Adequate hydration should be maintained during therapy.

Safety & Precautions

  • Common side effects: abdominal cramps, nausea, diarrhoea, heartburn, headache, dizziness, vomiting.

  • Rare but serious risks: tendon injury (especially in elderly or steroid users), nerve pain, low blood platelets, or allergic reactions—stop use and seek immediate care if these develop.

  • Contraindicated in pregnancy, breastfeeding, children, and known allergy to fluoroquinolones.

  • Not effective against viral infections; misuse can promote resistance.

  • May interact with certain medicines (NSAIDs, blood thinners, antidiabetics, antacids, multivitamins, corticosteroids)—inform your doctor about all medicines being taken.

  • Avoid alcohol and activities requiring alertness if dizziness occurs.

  • Dose adjustments may be needed for patients with impaired kidney or liver function.
