Ornida 500mg Tablet

Description

Ornida 500mg Tablet contains Ornidazole, an antiprotozoal and antibacterial agent. It is primarily used for the treatment of protozoal infections such as amoebiasis, giardiasis, trichomoniasis, and certain anaerobic bacterial infections. Ornidazole works by inhibiting nucleic acid synthesis in susceptible microorganisms, effectively killing the pathogens.

Uses

• Amebiasis (intestinal and hepatic)

• Giardiasis (infection of the small intestine)

• Trichomoniasis (sexually transmitted infection)

• Anaerobic bacterial infections (e.g., intra-abdominal infections, gynecological infections)

• Dental infections and periodontal abscesses caused by anaerobic bacteria

How It Works

Ornidazole enters the microbial cell and interferes with DNA synthesis, leading to cell death of protozoa and anaerobic bacteria. It is highly effective against both intestinal and systemic infections caused by these microorganisms.

Side Effects

Common:

• Nausea, vomiting

• Stomach pain or discomfort

• Metallic taste in the mouth

• Headache

Serious (rare):

• Allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling, difficulty breathing)

• Peripheral neuropathy (numbness, tingling in hands/feet)

• Seizures (rare, mainly with high doses or prolonged use)

• Dark urine or liver enzyme elevation

Precautions

• Avoid in patients with allergy to nitroimidazole drugs

• Use cautiously in patients with liver or kidney impairment

• Not recommended during first trimester of pregnancy; consult doctor before use in later trimesters or breastfeeding

• Avoid alcohol during treatment and for 48 hours after completion (may cause nausea, vomiting, flushing, and headache)

Administration

• Taken orally, usually once or twice daily, depending on infection type and severity

• Can be taken with or without food

• Complete the full course as prescribed to prevent recurrence or resistance
