Description

Rosugard 20 Tablet is a cholesterol-lowering medicine manufactured by Cipla Ltd. It contains Rosuvastatin (20mg), a potent statin (HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor) that helps to reduce bad cholesterol (LDL), triglycerides, and total cholesterol levels, while raising good cholesterol (HDL). It is usually prescribed when lower doses (like Rosuvastatin 5mg or 10mg) are not sufficient to control lipid levels.

How It Works

  • Rosuvastatin (20mg): Inhibits the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, which is responsible for cholesterol production in the liver.

  • Lowers LDL (bad cholesterol), triglycerides, VLDL, and improves HDL (good cholesterol).

  • Prevents plaque deposition in arteries, thus reducing the risk of atherosclerosis, heart attack, and stroke.

Medical Uses

  • Treatment of hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol)

  • Management of mixed dyslipidemia (raised LDL, triglycerides, and low HDL)

  • Prevention of cardiovascular events in patients with diabetes, hypertension, obesity, or a family history of heart disease

  • Used in primary and secondary prevention of heart disease and stroke

Benefits

  • Stronger cholesterol-lowering effect compared to 10mg dose

  • Prevents arterial blockage and improves blood circulation

  • Reduces long-term risk of heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases

  • Effective even in patients with high-risk profiles (like diabetics, smokers, or obese patients)

Possible Side Effects

  • Headache, dizziness, muscle pain or weakness

  • Nausea, stomach pain, constipation

  • Increased liver enzymes (requires monitoring)

  • Rare but serious: Rhabdomyolysis (severe muscle breakdown), kidney impairment

Warnings & Precautions

  • Liver function tests are required before and during treatment

  • Caution in patients with kidney disease, liver disease, thyroid problems, or excessive alcohol intake

  • Not safe in pregnancy or breastfeeding

  • Avoid grapefruit juice as it may increase side effects

  • Should be combined with a healthy diet, weight control, and exercise for maximum benefit
