1. Uses

• Powerful reduction of LDL (bad cholesterol).

• Lowers total cholesterol and triglycerides.

• Helps raise HDL (good cholesterol).

• Given in high-risk heart patients (diabetes, hypertension, previous heart attack/stroke).

• Used when lower statin doses are not effective enough.

• Helps prevent:

  • Heart attack

  • Stroke

  • Blockage in arteries

2. How It Works

• Atorvastatin 40mg: Strong statin that reduces cholesterol production in the liver.

• Ezetimibe 10mg: Blocks absorption of cholesterol from the intestine.

• Dual mechanism = much stronger cholesterol control than statin alone.

3. Dosage

• Usually taken once daily, at the same time each day.

• Can be taken with or without meals.

• Swallow whole; do not crush or chew.

• Dose may be adjusted only by your doctor.

4. How to Use

• Follow a low-fat, low-oil, low-cholesterol diet.

• Avoid alcohol or limit intake.

• Exercise regularly (30–40 mins/day).

• Continue even if you feel normal—cholesterol medicines work silently.

• Doctor may recommend:

  • Lipid profile tests

  • Liver function tests

  • Muscle enzyme (CK) tests if muscle pain occurs

5. Precautions

• Avoid if you have active liver disease.

• Use cautiously if you have:

  • Kidney problems

  • Thyroid disorder

  • History of muscle problems

• Not safe in pregnancy or breastfeeding.

• Avoid grapefruit juice (increases statin levels).

• Inform doctor if taking:

  • Antibiotics

  • Antifungal drugs

  • HIV medicines

  • Other cholesterol medicines

  • Blood thinners

• Report sudden muscle pain immediately.

6. Side Effects

Common:

• Headache

• Indigestion

• Diarrhoea

• Muscle pain

• Joint pain

• Fatigue

Serious (Rare):

• Severe muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis)

• Liver damage

• Allergic reactions (rash, swelling, breathlessness)

7. Seek Immediate Medical Care If:

• Severe muscle pain with dark urine

• Yellow eyes/skin

• Persistent vomiting or abdominal pain

• Difficulty breathing or swelling of face/lips.
