Description

Vildagard M 850mg/50mg Tablet is an oral antidiabetic combination medicine used to manage type 2 diabetes mellitus. It combines:

• Metformin (850mg) – lowers blood glucose by reducing liver glucose production and improving insulin sensitivity.

• Vildagliptin (50mg) – a DPP-4 inhibitor that increases incretin activity, enhances insulin secretion, and decreases glucagon levels after meals.

Together, these two agents provide complementary actions for better blood sugar control and prevention of long-term complications.

Uses

• Treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus when diet, exercise, and metformin alone are not sufficient

• Helps control fasting and post-meal (postprandial) blood sugar levels

• Reduces the risk of macrovascular and microvascular complications (heart disease, kidney disease, neuropathy, and retinopathy)

• Improves glycemic control without causing significant weight gain

Side Effects

Common side effects:

• Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea

• Headache or dizziness

• Metallic taste in mouth

• Loss of appetite

Less common but serious side effects:

• Lactic acidosis (rare but serious with metformin – symptoms: muscle pain, excessive weakness, irregular heartbeat, difficulty breathing, severe stomach pain)

• Pancreatitis (possible with vildagliptin – severe abdominal pain radiating to back, nausea, vomiting)

• Liver function disturbances (jaundice, dark urine, yellowing of eyes/skin)

• Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) – more likely if used with insulin or sulfonylureas

• Skin allergies or swelling (rare)

Precautions

• Not suitable for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA)

• Use with caution in kidney, liver, or heart impairment

• Should be taken with meals to minimize stomach discomfort

• Avoid alcohol consumption (increases lactic acidosis risk)

• Regular monitoring of blood sugar, liver enzymes, and kidney function is recommended
