Description

Etocox 120 mg Tablet contains Etoricoxib, a selective COX-2 inhibitor (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug – NSAID) that provides effective relief from pain, inflammation, and swelling. Unlike traditional NSAIDs, it selectively inhibits the COX-2 enzyme, reducing pain and inflammation with a lower risk of stomach ulcers compared to non-selective NSAIDs.

It is commonly prescribed for conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, gout, and acute pain (like dental or post-surgical pain). Due to its strong analgesic and anti-inflammatory action, it is usually recommended for short-term or as-needed use under medical supervision.

Uses / Indications

  • Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis (joint pain, stiffness, inflammation)

  • Ankylosing spondylitis (chronic spinal arthritis)

  • Acute gouty arthritis (pain and swelling in joints due to uric acid crystals)

  • Acute pain management (dental pain, post-operative pain, musculoskeletal pain)

  • Primary dysmenorrhea (menstrual pain)

How It Works (Mechanism of Action)

  • Etoricoxib (120 mg): Selectively inhibits the COX-2 enzyme, which is responsible for prostaglandin production during inflammation.

  • Reduced prostaglandin levels → decreased pain, swelling, and stiffness.

  • Selectivity for COX-2 helps reduce gastrointestinal side effects compared to traditional NSAIDs like diclofenac or ibuprofen.

Dosage & Administration

  • Typical adult dose: 60–120 mg once daily, depending on condition severity.

  • For acute pain or gout, 120 mg once daily is often prescribed for a short duration (usually not more than 8 days).

  • Should be taken with or without food, but taking with food may reduce stomach upset.

  • Always follow the doctor’s instructions; do not exceed prescribed dose.

Side Effects

Common:

  • Stomach pain, indigestion, heartburn

  • Headache, dizziness

  • Swelling of hands, ankles, or feet (fluid retention)

  • High blood pressure

Serious (rare):

  • Increased risk of heart attack, stroke, or blood clotting (especially with long-term/high-dose use)

  • Stomach ulcers, gastrointestinal bleeding (though less common than with traditional NSAIDs)

  • Severe allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling, breathing difficulty)

  • Liver or kidney dysfunction (yellowing of eyes/skin, dark urine, fatigue)

Precautions & Warnings

  • Not suitable for patients with severe heart disease, stroke history, uncontrolled high blood pressure, severe liver/kidney disease.

  • Should be used cautiously in elderly patients and those with cardiovascular risk factors.

  • Not recommended during pregnancy, especially in the third trimester, or while breastfeeding.

  • Alcohol should be avoided, as it may increase the risk of stomach irritation and liver issues.

  • Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration to minimize side effects.

Summary

Etocox 120 mg Tablet (Etoricoxib 120 mg) is a selective COX-2 inhibitor used for the treatment of arthritis, gout, and acute pain conditions. It provides powerful pain and inflammation relief while reducing the risk of stomach-related side effects compared to traditional NSAIDs. However, it carries a higher risk of cardiovascular complications, so it should be used cautiously and only under medical supervision.
