Description

Monocef-O 100 Powder for Oral Suspension is an oral cephalosporin antibiotic used primarily in children. Once reconstituted with clean water, it forms a suspension containing Cefpodoxime Proxetil 100mg per 5ml. It is effective against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, making it useful in common pediatric bacterial infections.

Uses

  • Respiratory tract infections – pneumonia, bronchitis, sinusitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis

  • Ear infections (otitis media)

  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)

  • Skin and soft tissue infections

  • Typhoid fever (in some cases)

  • Community-acquired pneumonia in children

How It Works

Cefpodoxime Proxetil is converted into Cefpodoxime in the body after absorption. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, making the bacterial cell fragile and causing death.

Side Effects

Common:

  • Diarrhea

  • Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain

  • Mild rash

  • Headache

Serious (rare):

  • Severe allergic reaction (swelling, difficulty breathing, anaphylaxis)

  • Persistent diarrhea due to Clostridium difficile infection

  • Abnormal liver function tests

Precautions

  • Should be given only under pediatrician’s supervision

  • Dose adjustment required in children with kidney problems

  • Avoid in case of known allergy to cephalosporins or penicillins

  • Administer after food to improve absorption and reduce stomach upset

Administration

  • Reconstitution: Add the recommended amount of clean, boiled and cooled water to the bottle and shake well.

  • Storage: Keep refrigerated after reconstitution and use within the time period mentioned on the label (usually 7–14 days). Shake well before each use.

  • Dosage: Depends on child’s age, weight, and severity of infection, as prescribed by the doctor.
