OPTANOL-OD

Description

OPTANOL-OD contains oxcarbazepine 300 mg in a sustained release (SR) formulation, designed for stable, long-lasting blood levels and convenient dosing. Oxcarbazepine is an anticonvulsant used primarily to treat and prevent certain types of seizures, particularly partial-onset (focal) seizures, in adults and children.

Clinical Uses

• Monotherapy or adjunctive therapy for partial (focal) seizures in epilepsy.

• May also be prescribed for other seizure types and sometimes for trigeminal neuralgia or bipolar disorder when conventional medicines are ineffective.

Mechanism of Action

Oxcarbazepine works by stabilizing hyperexcitable nerve cell membranes and inhibiting rapid, abnormal electrical activity in the brain. This decreases seizure frequency and severity by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels.

Dosage & Administration

• Take once or twice daily, as prescribed, at the same time(s) each day for best effect.

• Can be taken with or without food; swallow whole with water; do not crush or chew sustained release tablets.

• Continue taking regularly; do not stop suddenly to avoid risk of rebound seizures.

Common Side Effects

• Drowsiness, dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting, blurred or double vision, ataxia (unsteady movements), fatigue, hyponatremia (low sodium), skin rash.

• Rare: severe allergic/skin reactions, blood count changes, mood changes (seek urgent care if these develop).

Precautions & Safety Advice

• Inform your doctor about history of liver/kidney disease, low sodium, or psychiatric illness.

• Regular monitoring of blood sodium, liver function, and blood count during therapy may be needed.

• May increase sensitivity to alcohol and risk of drowsiness—avoid hazardous work or driving until effects are known.

• Safe use in pregnancy and lactation should be discussed with a physician
