Description

Pantosec IV Injection is an intravenous formulation of pantoprazole, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It is used in cases where oral administration is not possible, such as in hospitalized patients who cannot swallow tablets or in emergency situations requiring immediate acid suppression.

Pantoprazole works by blocking the proton pumps in the stomach lining, thereby reducing acid secretion. This helps in preventing further damage to the stomach and esophagus, allowing ulcers and erosions to heal.

Uses

  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) requiring IV therapy

  • Zollinger–Ellison syndrome (excessive acid production)

  • Erosive esophagitis

  • Duodenal and gastric ulcers

  • Prevention of stress-induced gastric ulcers in critically ill patients

  • Conditions requiring rapid acid suppression when oral treatment is not feasible

How It Works

Pantosec IV Injection inhibits the H⁺/K⁺ ATPase enzyme system (proton pump) in the gastric parietal cells, resulting in strong and long-lasting suppression of stomach acid secretion.

Side Effects

Possible side effects include:

  • Headache

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Abdominal pain or diarrhea

  • Thrombophlebitis (inflammation at injection site)

  • Flatulence or dizziness

Rare but serious: low magnesium levels, vitamin B12 deficiency (with long-term use), or severe allergic reaction.

Precautions & Warnings

  • Should only be administered under medical supervision.

  • Not recommended for patients with known allergy to pantoprazole or other PPIs.

  • Use cautiously in patients with liver impairment.

  • Long-term use may increase the risk of osteoporosis-related fractures.

  • Pregnant and breastfeeding women should use only if clearly needed and prescribed by a doctor.

Dosage & Administration

  • Usually given as an intravenous injection or infusion (slowly, over 2–15 minutes) in a hospital setting.

  • Typical dose: 40 mg once daily, adjusted as per medical condition.

  • Treatment may be switched to oral pantoprazole once the patient can take medicines by mouth.
