Description

Thyronorm 12.5mcg Tablet contains Thyroxine (Levothyroxine Sodium), a synthetic thyroid hormone. It is prescribed for the management of hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid gland), a condition where the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone. The 12.5mcg dose is usually recommended as a starting dose, for dose adjustments, or for sensitive patients such as the elderly or those with heart conditions.

Composition:

• Thyroxine (12.5mcg) – synthetic form of the natural thyroid hormone T4.

Indications / Uses:
Thyronorm 12.5mcg is prescribed for:

• Hypothyroidism (all forms – congenital, primary, secondary, or tertiary)

• Goiter (enlarged thyroid gland)

• Post-thyroidectomy or radioiodine therapy to maintain hormone balance

• Thyroid cancer suppression therapy (as part of long-term management)

• Supporting growth and development in children with thyroid hormone deficiency

How It Works:
Thyroxine works by replacing or supplementing the natural thyroid hormone. It regulates metabolism, protein synthesis, growth, brain development, and energy balance, helping the body return to normal function.

Dosage & Administration:

• Taken once daily, on an empty stomach, preferably in the morning, at least 30–60 minutes before breakfast.

• Swallow whole with water; avoid tea, coffee, or milk immediately afterward.

• The 12.5mcg dose is often used as an initial dose or for fine-tuning therapy in patients who require careful thyroid hormone adjustments.

• Dose is individualized based on TSH and thyroid hormone levels.

Side Effects:
If the dose is too high, side effects may include:

• Palpitations, irregular or rapid heartbeat

• Anxiety, nervousness, or restlessness

• Tremors, difficulty sleeping

• Excessive sweating, heat intolerance

• Unexplained weight loss despite good appetite
  Rare: chest pain, seizures, or allergic reactions.

Precautions & Warnings:

• Regular thyroid function tests are essential to monitor therapy.

• Not suitable for patients with untreated adrenal insufficiency.

• Caution in patients with cardiac disease, diabetes, or osteoporosis.

• Pregnant women may require dose adjustments – treatment should not be stopped suddenly.

• Should not be used as a weight-loss aid in individuals with normal thyroid function.
