Description

Ornida IV Infusion contains Ornidazole, an antiprotozoal and antibacterial agent. This formulation is intended for intravenous administration, allowing rapid delivery of the drug in cases of severe infections, systemic infections, or when oral administration is not possible. It is commonly used in hospitals under medical supervision.

Uses

  • Severe intestinal and hepatic amoebiasis

  • Giardiasis

  • Trichomoniasis (severe systemic cases)

  • Anaerobic bacterial infections – intra-abdominal, gynecological, dental infections

  • Post-surgical prophylaxis for anaerobic infections

  • Severe or complicated protozoal infections where oral therapy is not feasible

How It Works

Ornidazole enters the microbial cell and disrupts DNA synthesis, leading to cell death of protozoa and anaerobic bacteria. The IV route ensures rapid and complete bioavailability, making it effective in serious or systemic infections.

Side Effects

Common:

  • Nausea, vomiting

  • Mild stomach discomfort

  • Headache

  • Metallic taste (less common via IV)

Serious (rare):

  • Allergic reactions (rash, swelling, difficulty breathing)

  • Peripheral neuropathy (numbness, tingling) with prolonged use

  • Seizures (rare)

  • Liver enzyme elevation or jaundice

Precautions

  • Avoid in patients allergic to nitroimidazole drugs

  • Use cautiously in hepatic or renal impairment

  • Not recommended during first trimester of pregnancy; consult a doctor before use in later trimesters or breastfeeding

  • Avoid alcohol during treatment and for at least 48 hours after the infusion

Administration

  • Administered by intravenous infusion under medical supervision

  • The usual dose is 500mg diluted in 100–250 ml of suitable IV fluid, infused over 30–60 minutes

  • Dosage and duration depend on infection type, severity, and patient’s weight/condition

  • Monitor for allergic reactions and neurological symptoms during infusion
