Description
Femilon Tablet is a combined oral contraceptive pill (OCP) containing Ethinyl Estradiol (an estrogen) and Desogestrel (a progestin). It is primarily used for contraception (birth control) in women. In addition to preventing pregnancy, it also helps regulate menstrual cycles, reduce menstrual pain, and control hormonal imbalances in certain gynecological conditions.

How It Works

Desogestrel + Ethinyl Estradiol work together to:

Prevent ovulation (release of an egg from the ovary)

Thicken cervical mucus, making it harder for sperm to reach the egg

Alter the uterine lining, reducing the chance of implantation

Dosage & Administration
-
One tablet daily at the same time, usually starting on day 1 of the menstrual cycle.

Should be taken continuously for 21 days, followed by a 7-day break (placebo phase) before starting a new strip.

Must be taken exactly as prescribed for effective contraception.
Side Effects
Common:

Nausea, headache, breast tenderness

Weight changes, mood swings

Irregular spotting/bleeding, especially in the first few months
Serious but rare:

Risk of blood clots (deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism)

Hypertension

Stroke or heart attack (especially in smokers >35 years)
Precautions

Not recommended for women with history of blood clots, severe liver disease, breast cancer, or unexplained vaginal bleeding.

Smoking increases cardiovascular risks—women above 35 years who smoke should avoid use.

May interact with certain medicines like rifampicin, some anticonvulsants, and antibiotics, which can reduce contraceptive effectiveness.
