Description

Thyrox 25 Tablet contains Thyroxine (Levothyroxine 25 mcg), a synthetic thyroid hormone that acts as a replacement for the natural hormone produced by the thyroid gland. It helps regulate metabolism, energy production, growth, brain development, and body temperature. This tablet is mainly prescribed in hypothyroidism, where the thyroid gland fails to produce enough hormones, leading to tiredness, weight gain, slow heartbeat, and other metabolic disturbances.

Uses of Thyrox 25 Tablet

  • Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid gland) – relieves symptoms like fatigue, cold intolerance, and dry skin.

  • Goiter (enlargement of thyroid gland) – helps reduce swelling.

  • Thyroid hormone replacement therapy – after surgical removal of thyroid gland or after radioactive iodine treatment.

  • Thyroid cancer – used as supportive therapy to suppress tumor growth.

  • Children & infants – essential for normal brain and physical growth in congenital hypothyroidism (low thyroid from birth).

Dosage & Administration

  • The starting dose is usually low (such as 25 mcg) and gradually adjusted based on thyroid function tests.

  • Taken once daily in the morning on an empty stomach, at least 30–60 minutes before breakfast.

  • Swallow the tablet with a glass of water.

  • Always take at the same time every day for consistent results.

  • If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. Skip if it’s almost time for the next dose. Never double the dose.

  • Regular thyroid hormone (TSH, T3, T4) tests are required to adjust the dosage.

Possible Side Effects

When taken at the correct dose, Thyrox 25 is generally safe. Overdose or incorrect dosing may cause symptoms of hyperthyroidism, such as:

  • Palpitations, fast or irregular heartbeat

  • Nervousness, irritability, or anxiety

  • Headache, tremors, or restlessness

  • Heat intolerance, excessive sweating

  • Diarrhea

  • Weight loss despite normal appetite

  • Difficulty sleeping (insomnia)

  • Muscle weakness or cramps

Seek medical attention if you develop chest pain, severe palpitations, or unusual symptoms.

Precautions

  • Heart disease or hypertension: Use cautiously; dose adjustment is necessary.

  • Diabetes: Thyrox may alter blood sugar levels, requiring closer monitoring.

  • Osteoporosis: Long-term high doses can weaken bones.

  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding: Safe under medical supervision – thyroid hormone is vital for mother and baby. Dose adjustments may be required.

  • Drug interactions: Iron, calcium, antacids, cholesterol-lowering drugs, and some anti-seizure medicines may reduce absorption. Keep a 4-hour gap between these and Thyrox.

  • Consistency: Stick to the same brand and do not switch without consulting your doctor.

Key Points to Remember

  • Thyrox 25 is a low-dose tablet, often used to start treatment or in mild cases.

  • Take on an empty stomach for best absorption.

  • Treatment is usually long-term or lifelong.

  • Never self-adjust the dose without proper blood test guidance.
