Description

Thyrox 50 Tablet contains Thyroxine (Levothyroxine 50 mcg), a synthetic version of the thyroid hormone that helps restore normal hormone levels in people with hypothyroidism. Thyroid hormones are essential for regulating metabolism, growth, energy balance, brain development, and body temperature.

The 50 mcg strength is commonly prescribed as a maintenance dose or for patients who need gradual titration after starting on a lower strength such as 25 mcg. It helps provide precise control over thyroid function.

Uses of Thyrox 50 Tablet

  • Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid gland): Relieves fatigue, weight gain, hair loss, constipation, and slow heartbeat.

  • Goiter (thyroid swelling): Helps reduce enlargement of the thyroid gland.

  • Thyroid hormone replacement therapy: For patients who have had their thyroid removed surgically or damaged due to radiation.

  • Thyroid cancer management: Helps suppress tumor growth in certain cases.

  • Children with congenital hypothyroidism: Supports proper brain and body growth.

Dosage & Administration

  • The dosage is individualized depending on thyroid blood tests (TSH, T3, T4), age, weight, and medical condition.

  • Usually taken once daily, in the morning, on an empty stomach, at least 30–60 minutes before food.

  • Swallow the tablet with water.

  • Try to take it at the same time each day for best results.

  • If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered. If the next dose is near, skip the missed one—do not double.

  • Continuous treatment is often required, and dose adjustments are made based on periodic thyroid function tests.

Possible Side Effects

Thyrox 50 is safe when the dose is correct. Side effects usually occur from overdose or incorrect dosing and may resemble hyperthyroidism symptoms:

  • Palpitations or fast heartbeat

  • Anxiety, nervousness, or irritability

  • Shaking (tremors)

  • Headache or restlessness

  • Sweating and heat intolerance

  • Weight loss despite increased appetite

  • Loose stools (diarrhea)

  • Muscle cramps or weakness

  • Insomnia (trouble sleeping)

Rare but serious: chest pain, irregular heartbeat, or seizures – seek medical attention immediately.

Precautions

  • Heart disease & high blood pressure: Dose adjustment is required to avoid strain on the heart.

  • Diabetes: Thyrox can affect blood sugar control – monitor closely.

  • Bone health: Long-term high doses may increase osteoporosis risk.

  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding: Safe under medical supervision – thyroid hormone is essential for the baby’s brain and growth. Dosage may need adjustment during pregnancy.

  • Drug interactions: Iron, calcium, antacids, cholesterol-lowering drugs, and seizure medicines can reduce absorption. Keep a 4-hour gap between Thyrox and these medicines.

  • Consistency: Stick to the same brand; avoid switching without consulting a doctor.

Key Points to Remember

  • Thyrox 50 is a moderate dose often used for maintenance therapy.

  • Take it on an empty stomach for better absorption.

  • Therapy is generally lifelong in hypothyroidism.

  • Regular thyroid function monitoring is crucial to maintain correct dosage.
